DreamHack Open is set to kick off in Atlanta, Georgia. In this article, we will be breaking down the format, the teams and give you some tips for betting.

Competition Information

DreamHack Open Atlanta is part of DreamHack’s open circuit, which commonly features lower-ranked teams as opposed to the more prestigious DreamHack Masters. The event features a $100,000 prize pool and as the name indicates, the event will take place in Atlanta, Georgia in the United States.

The format for this tournament has remained consistent throughout the last couple of years. There will be two GSL style groups (Double-Elimination) and the opening and winners matches will be best-of-one. However, the elimination and decider matches will be best-of-three, ensuring that no team gets eliminated without playing at least one best-of-three.

The playoffs will be all best-of-threes, including the final.

The groups are as follows:

Group A:

  • 🇩🇰 Heroic
  • 🇵🇱 Illuminar
  • 🇩🇪 Sprout
  • 🇺🇸 Triumph

Group B:

  • 🇪🇺 CR4ZY
  • 🇧🇷 INTZ
  • 🇵🇱 Virtus.Pro
  • 🇺🇸 Chaos EC

This is the third time that this tournament played in Atlanta. Interestingly, French teams have found success here, as both Vitality and EnVyUs have won here in previous years. With no French time in attendance, we will see a different country hoist the trophy this time around.

The tournament kicks off November 15 and will finish November 17.

The Current Season

Group A

Heroic

Heroic
Record: 32 / 0 / 14
Most Played Map: Nuke (72.7%)
Best Map: Vertigo (100.0%)
Worst Map: Dust2 (50.0%)

Odds: 3.20

Heroic are coming in as the joint favorites alongside CR4ZY at odds of 3.20. The Danes have looked stellar as of late despite losing blameF to compLexity earlier in the year. They have recent scalps against the likes of NaVi, North, mousesports and NiP just to name a few. These are teams far stronger than the ones we will see in Atlanta, which makes Heroic a strong contender for the title.

Illuminar:

Illuminar
Record: 86 / 0 / 75
Most Played Map: Nuke (52.8%)
Best Map: Vertigo (63.0%)
Worst Map: Dust2 (16.7%)

Odds: 8.40

The Polish side Illuminar, previously known as x-kom, is one of the longer-standing rosters in the competition. The team most notably features players like innocent and reatz that have been standout players in the Polish scene for a while. However, the star player of this side is clearly their AWPer, STOMP, who has looked great since breaking out a couple of years ago. Illuminar will be a bit of an underdog in Group A, but they certainly have a chance of making it out as they have matched up evenly against Sprout in the past.

Sprout

Sprout
Record: 38 / 0 / 36
Most Played Map: Inferno (35.3%)
Best Map: Dust2 (71.4%)
Worst Map: Vertigo (0.0%)

Odds: 5.70

The German side Sprout has looked pretty solid online recently, with wins against teams like forZe and Illuminar. They have also taken maps against stronger teams like Vitality, NiP and Heroic on LAN. Their record on Dust2 is quite remarkable considering the volatility that the map brings, but their weakness on Inferno could easily come back to bite them. However, their mixture of young blood and experience with talents like syrsoN, faveN and k1to alongside veterans of CS:GO like denis and Spiidi makes them a very strong team and I would not be surprised to see them make a deep run here.

Triumph

Triumph
Record: 8 / 0 / 8
Most Played Map: Mirage (60.0%)
Best Map: Overpass (100.0%)
Worst Map: Dust2 (0.0%)

Odds: 27.50

The big underdog of Group A is the American team Triumph that mainly consists of players that used to represent Dignitas a while back. The only thing that they really have going for them is that the core of Grim, xCeed, Snakes and Voltage have played together dating back as far as 2017. Sadly, they have been drawn in the most difficult group in my mind with teams like Heroic and Sprout and I am quite frankly a bit surprised to see them priced lower than their American counterparts Chaos in Group B. The only way I could realistically see Triumph make it out is if they could win the BO1 opener against Heroic which would set them up for another potential BO1 upset in the winners match.

Group B

CR4ZY

CR4ZY
Record: 19 / 0 / 18
Most Played Map: Dust2 (62.5%)
Best Map: Inferno (75.0%)
Worst Map: Vertigo (0.0%)

Odds: 3.40

CR4ZY had two of their two best players, nexa and huNter, poached by G2 back in October. Instead, they opted to pick up the rising Bulgarian talent SHiPZ from Windigo as well as the Serbian veteran emi. Despite losing nexa and huNter, CR4ZY managed to win DreamHack Open Rotterdam shortly after, defeating Heroic in the final. Their results since then have been mixed, but there is no denying that there is still plenty of talent on this roster with players such as EspiranTo and SHiPZ.

INTZ

INTZ
Record: 8 / 0 / 4
Most Played Map: Mirage (66.7%)
Best Map: Vertigo (100.0%)
Worst Map: Inferno (0.0%)

Odds: 13.00

INTZ just picked up boltz from Luminosity, most known for his time on SK Gaming and Immortals. In my mind, they now have a pretty solid roster on paper. The trio of chelo, xand and shz make up a talented trio, and the addition of boltz gives them some much-needed experience. With kNgV going to MIBR, yeL has been the one to take over the AWP for the team, a role that he thrived in during his time on Luminosity. I don’t expect any miracles from this roster any time soon, but they definitely have upset potential and I think they are the best value on the board at odds of 13.00 and 8.00 to make finals.

Virtus.Pro

Virtus.Pro
Record: 46 / 0 / 52
Most Played Map: Mirage (57.1%)
Best Map: Nuke (61.9%)
Worst Map: Dust2 (0.0%)

Odds: 9.50

This Virtus.Pro roster has really struggled to maintain any sort of consistency since they got together. However, they do have the most talented roster in Poland. MICHU has been excellent for this team, and I think that the addition of phr is a good one. They have shown some level of promise with big upsets against teams like FaZe and mousesports recently which bodes well for the future, but they still drop games to teams that they really should be beating. Regardless, the Poles have gotten a pretty favorable group draw in my opinion and they definitely have a decent shot at making a bit of a run here.

Chaos EC

Chaos EC
Record: 11 / 0 / 9
Most Played Map: Nuke (57.1%)
Best Map: Train (100.0%)
Worst Map: Dust2 (0.0%)

Odds: 28.50

Chaos EC, previously known as Ben’s Anime Team (Yes, Ben’s Anime Team.) is led by the former iBuyPower and Ghost Gaming player, steel. The roster also contains some solid upcoming talents like Infinite and wippie. Oh, and Ben1337, of course. Despite this, they are coming in as the big underdog of this tournament at odds of 28.50. I have a hard time seeing Chaos make a run here, but I do think they have some upset potential compared to their North American counterparts in Group A. Probably more of a handicap bet in groups rather than an outright though.

Betting Tips

These DreamHack Open events tend to be pretty wild due to the BO1 matches in the opening and winners matches and we have seen plenty of upsets in these tournaments in the past. In addition, the teams are pretty closely matched at this level. For that reason, I generally prefer to take a stab at an underdog or two at events like these. With that said, if you want to take one of the favorites I would lean towards Heroic over CR4ZY. They might not have flashy players like EspiranTo and SHiPZ, but they are the more fundamentally sound team in my opinion.

As for upset teams, the team that I like the most is INTZ at current odds of 8.00 in the Top 2 market. Brazilian teams have historically done well at DreamHack Open events, and we have seen teams like Luminosity make finals here at long odds in the past. The addition of boltz is a good one, and they definitely have enough skill to challenge some of these European teams. Some BO1 magic and a lucky semi-final draw could easily set them up for a finals appearance which makes them a solid bet in the Top 2 market at odds of 8.00 in my opinion.
