The playoffs of the League of Legends World Championship is upon us, with the quarterfinals scheduled for the weekend. SK Telecom T1 and Funplus Phoenix are expected to advance. What about the other teams and props to consider?
Invictus Gaming (2.17)
Griffin started the Worlds with a loss to G2 Esports. They have subsequently found their fluency and momentum with six straight wins. Form is present. However, that doesn’t count for much in the pressure of a playoffs scenario. Invictus are coming off a morale-boosting victory against Team Liquid. They’ve won four of their last six matches at the Worlds, which is an indicator of good form.
FunPlus Phoenix (1.58)
Through this year’s Worlds, Funplus have one of the most consistent teams. They’ve endured two shock upsets: to Splyce and J Team. But apart from these defeats, they’ve showed their superiority against the rest of the Worlds contenders.
Funplus have been aided strongly by their experience and confidence after winning the LPL Summer 2019. Tian, Xinyi and Mingjing form a deep Jungle core of players, while Lwx and Crisp add plenty of depth from their respective positions. This Chinese team will be hard to stop as we move towards the business end of the Worlds.
Total Maps: Under 3.5 (1.43)
It’s highly likely that this game will not go past the requisite number of maps on account of SK Telecom’s superiority. Apart from a surprise defeat to Fnatic, SK Telecom haven’t lost a game over their last 12 matches. They should emulate their dominance from the Korean League and cruise past Splyce without needing an additional map to do so.
G2 Esports (1.80)
G2 are a proud esports franchise. Their League of Legends team has been together for a while now. Martin “Wunder” Jansen, Marcin “Jankos” Jankowski and Luka “Perkz” Perkovic have been combining for LoL wins since 2017. Skill of personnel, check.
G2 owned the LEC in 2019, winning both the Summer and Spring splits, a mighty achievement in its own right. In between those two titles, G2 won the Mid-Summer Invitational 2019 beating Liquid en route to the crown. Experience, check.
Form wise, G2 were beaten on consecutive days by Griffin last week. Apart from those defeats, G2 haven’t lost a game in their last 10 matches. Form, check.
